Pineapple Thief – Orange Box, Yeovil – 13/06/2008
Jun 14th
This was my first gig in 6 months and boy was it good to go to one again.
I’ve seen Pineapple Thief once before, at the launch gig for Little Man back in 2006, and to be honest I have very little memory of that gig due to the amount of alcohol I had consumed before the band came on (they had a 2 hour delay!). As such, it was really nice to see them in a sober state this time around.
There was one key difference this time around, in that they have lost a member. Wayne Higgins who was a secondary guitarist is no longer with the band and they are now a four piece. That said, they looked and sounded like a much tighter unit and looked really confident in what they were doing. It was good to see them this, way. The recent rise in gigs they are playing is obviously helping their playing gel that much more.
The material they played was mostly from the new album Tightly Unwound. It’s an album that I haven’t invested much time in as yet, and if I am being honest, from the few listens I have had it hasn’t grabbed me at all.
Hearing some of these tracks live has gone some way to helping me appreciate them more though and i’ve listened to the album on my iPod since and really enjoyed it.
I thought the turnout was pretty poor if I am being honest. I’d say there were no more than 100 people there, and they were dotted around the place. There seemed to be pockets of people who knew each other and stood together chatting through most of the gig. I’ve been to this venue before to see Oceansize and there was probably double the amount of people there for that and they all gathered infront of the stage to watch the band. It was just weird for that not to happen this time.
I felt the turnout was a bit of a letdown, but then a band as small as TPT (even though they are on the ascendence) playing in a town in the middle of Somerset …well lets say that Yeovil is hardly the gigging capital of the UK, so I think it was mostly faitful locals (the band are Yeovil based) and some hardcore fans in attendance.
The crowd didn’t seem that appreciative either. They was a good few seconds delay after each track ending before the applause filtered out, but that could well be a sign of people not being wholly familiar with the new music and not realising it was actually the end of a track.
That said, I still enjoyed it and would definately see the band again.
Setlist – I am rubbish with remembering that sort of detail, especially when I am not all that familiar with their latest album. They mostly played the new stuff, interspersed with bits from Little Man, 10 Stories Down and Variations on a Dream.
What I can say though, is that
Too Much to Lose was absolutely awesome and worth going to the gig for on it’s own!
Unfortunately, I didn’t manage to take any photo’s at this gig. I left my damn camera in the car and didn’t realise until the band were already on stage. Oh well …….
Media Center
Jun 1st
Over the last few weeks I have been experimenting with various old computer bits to try and build a ‘Media Center’ PC for the sitting room. I got some good results, but found that a big white box didn’t really go with the decor of the room! Not to mention it made a fair bit of noise.
I decided to browse around for some purpose built Media Center cases and found an excellent one on www.ebuyer.com. It was a ‘barebones’ case, which means it had the vital components already with it, such as a power supply, motherboard etc. All I needed was a processor, some RAM, a Hard Drive and a DVD drive. As luck would have it, I had most of that aswell and only needed to order the processor! Result!
It arrived the next day. Infact, it arrived just under 12 hours after I placed the order, which is pretty stunning! I set about putting it all together, hit a few hurdles along the way, but got there in the end and the box is now sitting inside our TV cabinet.
It looks just like a DVD player/VCR …except it is far better than that. Better still, its virtually silent. It has a gigantic heatsink cooler and so doesn’t need a fan to cool the processor. Its power supply is near silent. If you have SKY+ or another PVR then compare it to that in the noise stakes ….virtually none. Ideal.
Whats it purpose? Well it first and foremost runs Microsofts Windows Media Center and allows us to watch videos, view photo’s and listen to music via the TV. It’s hooked up to the home network via WiFi connection so can share all of the above with other PC’s in the house. It’s also a general PC that can be used to go online and even play some games. It has a wireless keyboard with a rollerball mouse on it and also a Windows Media Center remote control, which does what you would expect a DVD/TV/VCR remote to do with video etc.
All this is possible due to the High Definition TV we bought last month. Connecting a PC to a bog standard TV shows how crap a bog standard TV actually is …but with HD it’s as if the TV is a giant computer monitor.
Also, I’ve downloaded and watched a few HD videos, and as our SKY+ box isn’t HD enabled and we don’t have a blueray dvd payer, it enables us to watch HD content.
I’ll take some pictures and post them soon. I am chuffed to buggery with it!
